What I learned from 'the apprentice' about generating traffic

I have to admit that I really like watching 'the apprentice' (the uk version of the show - nothing against mr. trump and his wonderful hair I just think the uk version is way more interesting). Most of the show is pure entertainment but every now and then some helpful advice might be hidden.

1) Buy as low as possible
This sounds like a no-brainer but it is very important and we often might accept the price given to us. I was using Adwords to get some traffic to one of my websites and noticed that I used the suggested bidding price given by google to be on the first search page. It might be nice to be on the front page for a google search but it is totally unnecessary. Even with a way lower price my site still received lots of hits and I got way more traffic to it with the same budget.

2) Give freebies
To get things rolling give freebies of your product or related to it away. Either as a big giveaway on your website or better directly to important bloggers in your niche. This way they might post about you and/or your product and will get your name to a large audience. Don't overdo this technic as it might be seen as spamming but whenever you have a good strong product ready send a sample to those with influence in your branch.

3) Location, location, location
In many selling tasks this is key to success. You have to find a place with as much traffic as possible of the right audience for your product. But if your 'product' is traffic where is the right place to be?
Well in the internet one place is nearly as good as the other (besides having a strong domain name for your website which helps a great deal with SEO) but I am talking about incoming links. You want to place links at places with high traffic of your potential customers. How do you get those without paying for them? Be a active and helpful member on other blogs or forums. Post comments which are related to the topic at hand and include a link to a related article on your site. This is way more effectiv than leaving random posts with just your signature. Even if those get past the spam filter they amount of people following those links is very little.

Even if those might sound trivial and obvious they are important helpers in generating traffic for your website.

'Sex sells' is a well known marketing slogan. We see it all the time in tv commercials or print ads all over town. And alot of blogs and websites us this formular too. Even if the actual product or article might not be related to women you often have some beautiful girl next to it.
If the product is targeted (mainly) to a male audience the presence of an attractive woman might catch the eye of a possible customer. Getting attention is the first and maybe the most important step in selling a product. Without someone watching the right way there simple is noone to present to. From their on it still isn't a simple task to sell something but you just can not skip this first step:

1) get attention
2) ...
3) profit

As with all things in life be careful to keep the right balance. Not all products can or should be present with sex. And more importantly your eye catcher should not dominate over your actual product. If the target does not even notice your actual product or article you gained nothing at all. Make sure it guides your traffic your way but they still read what you have to say.

Build it and they will come

That's what they want you to believe. Just build a blog and they will come in hordes. Write a bunch of interesting articles and all you have to do is monetize those thousands of visits each day. Well I guess for a few lucky ones this might work. If you have new and helpful content. But even then you need some people to spread the initial word. Just a couple of influental "big players" might be enough but chances are they will not be visiting your blog or website at this early stage. First you will need many, many readers who stumple over your posts by accident until you will hit a "critical mass" before your blog is ready to take off. To reach this threshold you will need to work for each and every visit.....or pay for it.
I think there is something like active and passive traffic. As with earning money the passive way is so much better. Passive traffic will come to you because you:

have people following your blog (because you established your name)
have tons of incoming links (because you established your name)
have tons of search traffic (because you have very good content, expert SEO, and even more incoming links)

Now what is active traffic ? That is the traffic you generate by going out and advertise your blog:

By exchanging links with other blogs in your niche
By participating in traffic exchange programs
By submitting articles to directories
By spaming, I mean leaving comments on other blogs or websites
By flat our paying for it

Halftime results

August is half way through it's time to check how I'm on my way to achieve the goal I set me. My goal for august was to get 1000 visits for the month. So far I only got 273 visits so I'm not on target so far. Also I think some of the effects should be kicking in later in the month. Let's check my list of actions:

be active on entrecard => check ... 178 visits where from entrecard + 19 from entrecard ads
implement a new design => still open :-(
do a contest => check ... I started my first contest, but I am not happy with the results so far. Until now not a single person entered and it only lead to ~10 visits from different shout boxes where I announced it. Plus 15 visits from a comment I left at one other blog. Any feedback why you don't like the contest or why you think others don't enter is highly appreciated.
other actions => I think a very good way is by useful comments on other blogs. So I'll add that to my action list.

So I've got ~750 visits to go in 15 days. Which means approx. 50 per day. The contest is open for one more week and some people really should enter in the last few days. If you are the only one entering you will get 1400 ECs and the ad spot until the end of september. The ad spot is worth at least another ~1500 ECs. Remember even just entering will gain you 400 ECs if you are one of the first three to join.

A couple of days ago I posted about my goals for this month and one of the items on my action list was to finally do a contest to help generate traffic. Here is it! And because I just recently found a nice way to make some change on the side by reading articles the objective of this contest is also set.

Read articles to earn money

Some might already know that option but I just discovered this easy way to earn some money today. There is no startup cost and you don't need to provide any private details besides an email address.

All you have to do is read some articles and rate them between 1 and 5 stars depending how well written they were.
You can choose between different topics from which you like to read articles. I found about 1/3 of the articles I read so far really interesting and useful. So I actually enjoyed reading them. Very few where really bad and sometimes hard to read. But it really is a good way to get some interesting ideas from the topic you have choosen which might even help you for own posts.
And as I already said you get paid to do it. Here is the payment structure which depends on the number of lines the text has:

setting a goal

A new month has begun and most people are setting goals on how much money to make or how much traffic to achieve. But in my opinion many bloggers are missing important things when settings goals. They say "I made $y last month and i wanna make $x this month by blogging". That of course is a goal but if you achieve it or not often seems to be determined by chance. If you set yourself a goal you should always focuse on the following items:

the goal
a timeframe until you want to achieve it
a plan of action to get there
(constant) reflecting if you are still on your way

the goal
The goal you want to achieve should be set realistically but as high as possible.Never set easy goals for yourself. You don't get anything for achieving easy targets besides an ego boost. If you miss a goal that was set to high you still achieved something. If you set yourself a target that's impossible to reach it is also impossible or very hard to reflect on what you actually achieved.
In my special case I got a blasting 146 visits on this blog in the last month. While I was not very active. My goal for this month is to have 1000 visits by the end of this month.

the timeframe
In this scenario of course the timeframe is already given. But if you wanna achieve other goals like a certain amount of money or something else you still should always set a fixed date by when you wanna reach this goal. Otherwise people always tend to get lazy and do things "soon".

plan of action
This is what must bloggers seem to miss. They want to achieve something but it often seems just like wishful thinking. They always miss that they have to do something to reach their goal. Of course if you set your aim at the same result as last month you only have to continue what you are doing. But that's not having a goal...
You should have a plan on what you want/have to do to achive your goal. That can be a whole list of items. And if possible you should already estimate how that will help you to reach your goal.
In my current case my list of actions is:

Be active on entrecard => this should gain me about 10 visits each day (310 total)
Implement a new design for the blog => longterm
Do a contest to get backlinks and visitors => longterm + approx. 400 visits
Post more often (at least once a week) => +5 visits from blogger (160 total)

reflecting on your progess
Using the plan of action you can also trace your progress:

What have I already done and how much did I achieve by doing it?
Did a certain action really "gain" me as much as I thought?
Am I still on pace to reach my goal ?
Are there other actions that might help me to reach my goal ?

I will write a post about the progress of my goal in two weeks from now (17th of august) and reflect on all these questions. And see if my actions are working and if I estimated some of the traffic correct.

Even though this post uses my personal plan to gain more readers I think it shows the important points for all kind of goals someone tries to achieve.

entrecard - why you should drop your card

as you might already know from my previous post i use entrecard. i wrote a short description about how entrecard works here. today i wanna show you some results if you use entrecard and how much traffic you can expect just by dropping entrecards on other blogs.
there are three reasons you should drop cards. and you should drop many and frequently.
1) each drop earns you one credit - which can be used to advertise on other blogs. so if you drop enough cards you can get a lot of incoming links to your site each day.

2) most people are going to have a look at your blog after you drop a card at their site. have a look at the following screen shot of my stats.

the last graphic shows the number of cards i dropped on other blogs. now let's have a look at that last peak and what happened after it. i dropped 120 cards on that day. and received a total of 36 cards over the next 4 days. plus a total of 33 clicks to my blog from entrecard. as you can see i did not have any adverts running at this time so all this cards and clicks are a direct result of my own dropping.
i did get about one click for every 4th card i dropped. with the possibility to drop up to 300 cards each day this would result in about 75 clicks from entrecard alone. that's a good way to generate some traffic for any blog and especially newer or smaller blogs.

my next step will be to analyze how effective the adverts are working and if it's better to invest in one expensive advert or multiple cheaper ones.

Here is a small list of some small time money makers. Nothing to get rich over night but all require minimum time investment. Some of them are even more of a fun activity (where you do not a website or blog). So here we go:

king.com
king.com is a site where you can play various games for small amounts of money. You can also play for fun if you do not feel like playing for money. Or just play the daily freerolls where you can win money without risking any of your own. I just made a cashout of $45 by strictly playing freerolls and the two games I like the most (chuzzle and bejeweled 2). You can either play single games or large tournaments. Not something to get rich but if you like to play some small fun games anyway why not there and get paid to do so.

entrecard
I guess everybody already knows about entrecard but some weeks ago they started their paid ads and you can now also exchange your entrecard credits for real cash. And it is really easy to get credits. For every entrecard you receive or give away you receive one credit. By dropping alone you can earn up to 300 credits each day. And you will also get credits for displaying other sites card on your blog or site. This way even small sites will low traffic volume can make some cash on the side.

moola
Last but not least moola. Moola is a mixed bag of all different kind of things. Mostly it is a playing site like king but with only a handful of games. These games all have a lot higher element of chance than the ones at king.com. The basic concept is that you always play one on one and might double your investment. You will get your first penny from moola (and every time you drop to zero you will get another one). I finally joined Entrecard...I cause you don't know what Entrecard is here is a quick sum up.
Entrecard is your business card on the web. You can drop your card on other blogs to let them know you are around. Everytime you drop a card or someone drops a card at your blog you receive entrecard credits.
You can use this credits to buy ad space at other blogs. This is a simple and cheap way to get advertised on big and well known blogs. Even the famous Johnchow still has the Entrecard widget on his blog. So if you collect (or buy) enough credits you may even buy a little space on his blog.
On the other hand you can of course earn credits yourself by showing ads from other users. That is a good and simple way to swap traffic with blogs about similar topics. The amount of credits you collect for showing anothers logo depends on the number of people who want to advertise on your site. If 3 people are in the waiting list for your blog it costs them 2*2*2 = 8 credits to buy this spot.
1000 credits are currently traded for $ 3-4 on ebay. So that is already money in the bank if you don't want to advertise on other sites. But for small blogs in think it is best to reinvest your credits and buy some advertisment on a blog with the same topic and alot of traffic.
My next step is to design a nice logo which gets more attention then the standard design provided by Entrecard. Feel free to drop me your card and i'll have a look at your site ;-)

Getting a (writing) routine

With blogging/writing it's just like with all other things in life if you don't have a fixed routine youmight get distracted and go off doing other things....or just hang around and do nothing.
"The time it takes to finish a product will stretch to fill the time to the deadline"
...And if you don't have a deadline that might be forever. So if you don't have specify a time by which you will have something done you might be never starting....Always other occupations will be more important. That's why you should have a fixed routine for important stuff...Just like on a job. So stick to the same time each day or on a specific day in the week to write your blog posts. Or set a time frame by which you want to have finished X posts so you only have to put them online.
Time management is key in many parts of life....so use yours wisely.

OneBuckWiki

Some time back i posted about the FiveDollarWiki. Max was offering free pages for a link to his project. Now he gave me five pages to his new project, the OneBuckWiki. Each page only costs one single buck....at least for the first 1000 pages. The price increases after 1000 pages sold by 10 dollar. So right now after ~1500 pages sold each new page costs $10.
I made a page about DealDotCom and it is doing pretty good. I will post about the other 4 pages soon. Well two of them are reserved for future projects so that might take a while.

The new design of the javascript widget for DealDotCom is finally ready. It's really looking great (thx to dubaischeich. don't be afraid of the link...it's all good). The colors match the new DDC scheme and the 3d look with the round corners is really so more up to date.

I'm not dead yet - october stats

Sorry for the lack of updates but my pc is a mess right now. So here are some numbers of my first month blogging. The blog had 222 unique visitors and 407 page views. I guess that is okay after i did not blog a lot. I made 16 cent through google adsense. It's next to nothing but it's all pure profit since the hosting and blogging service of blogger is free. So i made 16 cent by something i enjoy doing....

The DealDotCom widget was doing pretty good. It had 10.780 page views and is included into 48 blogs or websites right now.

The goal is to brake the 20k mark this month. I will change the design within the next couple of days and will release a different size of the widget as well.

I changed the background of the widget to be white, so you do not have to set the background on your own. I also checked the sizes of the product picture again. I always thought that the picture will have the same size every day but it seems like that it is changing. I adjusted the code so the picture always takes the same space and the widget will not be chopped at the lower end.

using meta tags within the html of your site helps google and other search engines to figure out what your website or blog is all about. strange most do not use these tags. i guess most editors do not offer a feature to set the value for the meta tags. even blogger itself does not provide an easy way to set it. so you have to edit html of the template directly.
i added the following line within my header section:

"meta content='traffic, clicks, seo, money' name='keywords'"

a lot of traffic will always be based on search engines like google and yahoo. so you have to give them what they are looking for or better what the users are looking for. they are certain buzz words many people are interested in.
in my last post i already wrote two big buzz words. sex and money....if your website or blog doesn't provide any information to these words you will generate a lot of traffic for your website who are not really interested in what you have to offer....so they will quickly leave. that's not what we want to achieve.
so you have to use buzz words that your potential visitor will be looking for and so generate traffic!! i used "generate traffic" frequently within this post because i think many people will use this search term.
right now "simpsons - the movie" is a real hype according to http://alexa.com/. so if you have a blog related to comics or movies you should make a post about it.
well if you are as evil as http://www.johnchow.com/ you could make a post about it without being related to the topic at all....just generate traffic...some of these will be interested in your site even if they didn't search for you

building traffic....that is all this blog is about. finding different ways to build traffic. i will test different approaches and see how it is drawing people to this site.

we will see how the traffic develops which each post and it demonstrate what are good and cheap ways to generate traffic for your website or blog.

there are some topics that seem to generate traffic all by themselves...like money or sex. i guess paris hilton is a good example ;-)
so, sex sales and money is sexy ....that is like a perpetum mobile. all you have to do is keep getting press...no matter good or bad. news means traffic.
